Hayes contributed to the soundtrack of the neo-noir heist film Dead Presidents, the Hughes Brothers’ follow-up to Menace II Society. Released that October, Dead Presidents featured Hayes’ classics “Walk on By” and “The Look of Love,” introducing those songs to a new generation. “We wanted to embrace, transcend and reclaim Blaxploitation while taking it to another level,” co-director/co-writer Allen Hughes said in 2021 while taking a break from shooting the Tupac Shakur documentary Dear Mama. “We needed music that captured the feel, so, when I heard those (Hayes) songs I was like, ‘Yo, this is the movie.’” https://crimereads.com/isaac-hayes-memphis-michael-gonzales/
Thank you John. I enjoyed your piece. I saw Dead Presidents when it came out. Though I grew-up with those songs, hearing them within the context of that film was such a thrill.
John + Ricky this was good and y'all mentioned some awesome classics! Songs in Space Jam still get me hype and Isaac Hayes "Walk on By" automatically makes me think of Dead Presidents. The 90s and early 00s brought all the vibes and the experiences of watching the films and listening to the music were better.
Thanks Alex! Exactly! Sometimes I want to chalk up my love for that era as pure nostalgia but when I listen back, it's clear that it was truly a golden age of entertainment. Appreciate you reading 🙏🏾
If there's one thing that Martin Scorsese knows how to do, it's to curate a great soundtrack. Ricky always comes in clutch with the picks and did a great job of bringing those feelings to life 👌🏾
We had a 'Black Music' series that ran on BlackStack a few months ago (if you haven't read those already). Otherwise, hopefully, we'll soon be able to cook up another collab sometime soon 👀. Can't promise that it'll be music-related though

def looking forward to digging into this.
Just listened to it and I'm only realizing now that I've never heard Tiny sing before. I'm so used to Kandi being the lead vocals. Great track 👌🏾
An underrated cover for sure ✨
