While I have my issues with the book overall, David Ritz covered the making of this album really well in his unauthorized biography of Aretha Franklin. I enjoyed the angle you took on this.
Thanks! I’ve always been curious about that book but never got around to reading it (especially since Aretha was so strongly against it). It’s tough trying to respect an artist’s wishes while making sure that you don’t miss out on greatness. Amazing Grace is one of the rare moments when the estate / producers had it right
Detroit Jewel. Wonderful description of an outstanding documentary. My favorite scene was when the preacher left the pulpit and sat down in the pews, overwhelmed by emotion at the singing.
Thanks man, same here 🙌🏾. That was the scene that clinched it for me as they felt something, I also felt something. It was like I was there with them. A surreal yet magical experience
I need to watch this doc again asap. A spiritual experience and I don't use that word lightly. Thanks for the vivid reminder, John. The reactions of the congregation always restore my faith in human beings and our capacity to really feel something. The way Aretha approaches the pulpit transfixed me. I made a little video for 'Wholy Holy' from footage. You might like it. https://www.instagram.com/amarofpatel/reel/CD_LtBontpH/
Lovely to see this up here. As LA is easing back into live events hope to have you on Performance Review this year.
