Thank you for this. Love the atom breaking vs collision bit. Some times when you layer samples you hear sounds that never were there in the first place … or… sometimes the records speak new melodies that need to be drawn out. Very other worldly experience. Also dig the diversity of examples … Mariah Carey’s pen is very strong.

Thank you for reading 🙏🏾. Had to dust off some old physics knowledge for that atoms bit 😂.

Mariah’s pen game is what made me a fan for life and it’s a quality of her music that is severely underrated. I’ve written some other pieces about her (both on Noire Notes and my fictional series: Life Told Through Rap) if you’re interested.

Agreed, when done right, sampling is truly a magical, almost transcendental experience 👌🏾

Word, happy to dig into those I’ll check those articles out. Aside from being a fan, Studying and learning about other artists writing helps me get my pen reps up too. I appreciate your analysis. It’s very helpful for artist like myself because it highlights what works well. What you want to mimic.

On the note on about sampling, I actually have a track that I did with the producer about 2020. Would like to share with you, it should be on streaming. The audio quality isn’t the best, but I am really proud of the lyrics.

Very dope essay on a hip hop innovation. J Dilla from Detroit was the OG of the soul sample.
